Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga

 Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas (sacred shrines of Lord Shiva) in India. It is located in the Sahyadri hills of the Western Ghats near Pune, Maharashtra. The temple is a significant pilgrimage site and holds immense religious importance among devotees of Lord Shiva.


1. Mythological Significance:


Bhimashankar is associated with the legend of Lord Shiva defeating the demon Bhima, the son of Kumbhakarna (brother of Ravana). Bhima performed intense penance to gain power and started harassing sages and gods. To protect his devotees, Lord Shiva appeared and vanquished Bhima. The place where Shiva manifested his divine light (Jyotirlinga) came to be known as Bhimashankar.



2. Architecture:


The temple reflects Nagara style architecture with intricate carvings on its walls and pillars.


The temple complex has been constructed using locally available black stones.


It is believed to have been built during the 13th century and later improved by rulers like the Marathas.


3. Location:


Bhimashankar is situated in the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary in the Pune district, Maharashtra, at an altitude of about 3,250 feet.


The lush green surroundings, waterfalls, and dense forests make it a scenic location.


4. Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary:

The sanctuary around the temple is home to rare species of flora and fauna, including the Indian Giant Squirrel (Shekru), which is the state animal of Maharashtra.



5. Festivals and Celebrations:


Mahashivratri is the major festival celebrated with great enthusiasm and attracts thousands of devotees.


Devotees also visit the temple during Shravan, an auspicious month in the Hindu calendar.


6. Spiritual Importance:

According to belief, visiting the Jyotirlingas washes away sins and grants spiritual liberation (moksha). Bhimashankar is considered a powerful place for devotees seeking Lord Shiva's blessings.



7. Access and Trekking:

The temple is accessible by road from Pune (approx. 110 km) and Mumbai (approx. 220 km).

Bhimashankar is also a popular trekking destination, especially for adventure enthusiasts.
